An Introduction to Somatic IFS: An Embodied Approach to Healing Trauma

Led by Susan McConnell
September 2022 | Trauma Happens to the Body
Our trauma stories are written in our cells and flow in our fluids. They shape our bodies and the ways we live and love. The desperate and misguided attempts of our parts to have these untold stories locked in our bodies can create gut-wrenching lifelong distress. We will explore how our parts use every system of our bodies to do their jobs and attempt to tell the nonverbal stories. We will experience how the first two of the five Somatic Internal Family System practices –awareness and breath—reestablish psychobiological regulation to bring stability and safety to the internal bodymind system.
  • Live Webinar with Susan McConnell on September 12th @ 12pm ET /11am CT/10 am MT/9am PT
  • Live Webinar with Dick Schwartz on September 21st @ 4pm ET/3pm CT/2pm MT/1pm PT
October 2022 | A Somatic Approach to Collective Trauma
Our bodies hold not only our personal traumas but also our collective traumas. We are born into a traumatized world burdened by separation and fragmentation. The roots of our individual somatic trauma stories may be embedded in racist, patriarchal, and heterosexist attitudes transmitted through societal institutions. These cultural burdens, at the least, insidiously serve to extinguish our access to Embodied Self energy and, at the worst, cause loss of life. We will explore how cultural, ancestral, and intergenerational trauma is carried in our bodies. We will experience how our ancestors' somatic legacies can restore our body’s sensitivities and responsivity. We will consider how the practice of Radical Resonance, the third of the five SIFS practices, can address both individual and collective trauma.
  • Live Webinar with Dick Schwartz on October 12th @ 4pm ET/3pm CT/2pm MT/1pm PT
  • Live Webinar with Susan McConnell on October 17th @ 12pm ET /11am CT/10 am MT/9am PT
November 2022 | Witnessing the Body Stories of Trauma
Trauma occurs when, faced with a threatening situation, our attempts to reach out for help, then to either fight or escape, have failed. Confronted with this inescapable threat, our bodies release a biochemical blast to immobilize and dissociate. The parts’ interrupted movement story can lie stagnant for years in frozen postures and faces, habitual, repetitive gestures, and chronic pain and stiffness. The frozen stories of trauma thaw gradually with the 4th practice of Mindful Movement as the Somatic IFS Therapist facilitates the clients’ embodiment of their traumatized parts in tolerable doses so they can release their burdens embedded in the body’s systems activated during the trauma. The story of the Autonomic Nervous System’s inherent and adaptive responses is slowly, safely, and compassionately revisited and witnessed by Embodied Self Energy, reinstating the truncated movement impulses.
  • Live Webinar with Susan McConnell on November 7th @ 12pm ET /11am CT/10 am MT/9am PT
  • Live Webinar with Dick Schwartz on November 16th @ 4pm ET/3pm CT/2pm MT/1pm PT
December 2022 | Re-storying Trauma; Restoring our Birthright of Embodiment
Unresolved trauma blocks our embodiment and our Self energy, and somatic practices combined with the IFS Model can restore both. Embodied Self is the felt experience of our connectedness and our interconnectedness allowing for the free flow of energy and information as all the qualities of Self are experienced in the body. The physiological resolution of trauma is anchored and integrated through the five Somatic IFS practices. We enjoy greater body awareness, normalized breathing patterns, increased capacity for resonance, more expressive and empowered movement, and the ability to receive and enjoy touch that is attuned and healing as our birthright of embodied Self energy is reinstated individually and societally.
  • Live Webinar with Dick Schwartz on December 7th @ 4pm ET/3pm CT/2pm MT/1pm PT
  • Live Webinar with Susan McConnell on December 12th @ 12pm ET /11am CT/10 am MT/9am PT
