IFS as Potential Treatment for Physical Illness: Healing Parts That Make Us Sick Richard Schwartz, PhD and Lissa Rankin, MD with Lou Lukas, MD
IFS has proven effective with medical syndromes (Shaddick et al., 2013), and in this workshop we will explore both the theory and practice around that work. Clearly, parts can affect our bodies when they have no other route to get through to us, and IFS can help them realize they don’t have to do that. Lissa Rankin, MD, the New York Times best-selling author of Mind Over Medicine, has been researching her seventh book, Sacred Medicine, for seven years. When Western medicine not only failed to help her own illness but made it worse, she began researching treatments that harnessed our minds’ innate ability to self-repair, as well how moving stuck life force through the body can potentially cure disease. Four years ago, she discovered IFS and sees it as a paradigm-shifting way to understand and integrate many healing modalities, including conventional medicine, psychotherapy, spirituality, energy healing, and shamanism. Dr. Lukas is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine who treats people with life-threatening illness and is an active faculty member for hundreds of medical students and residents. She integrates IFS principles into her work and is now looking for ways to introduce IFS to medical learners at various stages of their personal and professional development.
This workshop will explore the integration of IFS and other healing modalities, offer experiential exercises to help you learn to listen to the parts that are affecting your body and to those who know how to heal it, and increase your access to healing Self energy.

Bringing IFS to the Lay Public on a Grand Scale Hailan X. X. Guo, MD, PhD, Founder of Hailan Family Well-being, and Joy X. Y. Huang, MA
Traditionally in the Western world, IFS has been taught to
and utilized by mental health professionals in a 1:1 format.
Yet the potential of IFS resonates without borders. In China, Hailan Family Well-being, a pioneering personal growth and transformation organization, piloted, with endorsement from the Center of Self Leadership (CSL), an IFS-based Inner Peace Coach (IPC) initiative that aims to bring IFS to the lay public on a grand scale. A 320-person Introduction to IFS workshop (led by Dick Schwartz) and a 130-person retreat on Working with Exiles (led by Paul Ginter) have been successfully completed in China in 2017 and 2018. Both Dick and Paul will share their experience of bringing IFS to China. We are honored to have Dr. Hailan Guo, founder of this organization, join us from China. She’ll introduce the secret of effectively bringing IFS to the lay public on a grand scale via her integrated 865 Self-coaching model.

As the use of IFS expands and evolves, we’re excited to welcome three innovative practitioners who are extending the reach of IFS beyond the traditional application of the Model. Deran, Caitlin, and Sarah are all breaking down borders to bring IFS to new places. During this plenary session, you’re invited to hear how these IFS innovators are using IFS in new ways and to consider how you are expanding the use of IFS in your own community.
IFS & Diversity: As the founder of Black Therapists Rock, Deran has been dedicated to making mental health and emotional well-being culturally relevant for marginalized communities. During this session, she will explain how she utilizes IFS to foster passion for diversity and dedication to unity. Deran will also share how she has personally removed the painful, though once necessary, borders around her own heart to create more space for community and collective healing.
IFS & the Body: Dr. Caitlin Capistran is taking IFS inside the body to dissolve the border between body and mind. She’ll share what our bodies can reveal about our parts and how IFS can be used to transform our physiology and support physical health. Caitlin will discuss how our bodies reflect our internal systems, the direct impact parts can have on our physiology, and how to support your clients’ physical health through the use of IFS.
IFS & Technology: Sarah is passionate about breaking down borders through the integration of technology and mental health. She will share scenarios from her own experience and how she sees the utilization of IFS and technology together to expand and enhance the healing capacity of IFS.
Ketamine-Assisted IFS Therapy
Dr Robert M Grant, MD, MPH
Ketamine is a legal and FDA approved psychedelic medication for treatment of depression. Integrating psychotherapy with ketamine treatment prolongs the benefit from single ketamine treatments. IFS is well suited for use with psychedelic therapies because it embraces the multiplicity of the mind, seeks full consent continuously, enables reprocessing of traumatic memories, leverages the ketamine induced neuroplasticity in shifting neural networks involved in mood, memory and self perception. Dr Grant has clinical experience over 2 years with integrating ketamine assisted psychotherapy with IFS; the process and outcomes will be presented.

Richard Schwartz began his career as a systemic family therapist and an academic and he is now on the Faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Meadows treatment center in Arizona. Grounded in systems thinking, Dr. Schwartz developed the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model in response to clients’ descriptions of various parts within themselves. In 2000, he founded the Center for Self Leadership (now IFS Institute - www.ifs-institute.com), which offers three levels of trainings and workshops in IFS for professionals and the general public, both in this country and abroad. A featured speaker for national professional organizations, Dr. Schwartz has published many books and over fifty articles about IFS.
